Music... please!

This town needs music! We have to end the binge-drinking-only-scene downtown. People want variety! People need an alternative. Amherst College and UMass should chip in and open up a center for the arts -- a place where students and local folks can go to enrich their lives with live shows from all over the world. Maybe there would be less drunk driving... Maybe it would create a more healthy nightlife in Amherst...
Maybe it would create new business... The possibilities are endless! So help us bring in the live music! Let us know of any ideas regarding funding for a center for the arts in Amherst as comments.

I think any activty, like live music, that draws people together can be a constructive plus in people's lives and in the community *and* as you point out, offer an alternative to binge drinking events.

*My* criticism of "maybe" is that it doesn't make for a compelling thesis.

Assuming the university or college would derive sufficient benefit to fund such an activity is presumptuous. Its up to you to make the case.

Is it time for a men's and women's club in Amherst? We have a club for boys & girls and elderly affairs, too. I bet MADD would support it although I don't think you're calling for tea-totaling just moderation, right? I wonder if a local restaurant might have space. What about the boys club?

Secure the space. Secure the musicioans. Print some leaflets. You're off to the races.

I might if I still lived in Amherst. I live in eastern mass now.

It's a good idea, especially if you could find someone with space who would be willing to host it. Would you rule out having it in a bar?

I think it would have to have some direct benefit to the host to make it attractive.

Is there regularly scheduled live music going on already at either college in a social atmostphere setting? If there is, is the larger community invited?
